To declare an independent nation of Sealand
The Principality of Sealand is a self-proclaimed micronation located on a former British World War II defense platform in the North Sea, about 12 kilometers off the coast of Suffolk, England. Established in 1967 by Paddy Roy Bates, a former British Army major, it claims to be an independent sovereign state but is not recognized by any established nation.
Sealand is known for its unique history and legal disputes. It was originally occupied by Bates to broadcast a pirate radio station. Later, he declared it an independent state, naming himself and his wife as Prince Roy and Princess Joan. Sealand has its own constitution, flag, national anthem, and issues its own passports and currency.
Despite its unrecognized status, Sealand has attracted attention for its assertions of sovereignty and incidents like an attempted coup in 1978. Its existence raises interesting questions about the nature of statehood and sovereignty under international law.
