New or Used $1k range

Looking at getting an American Tele. I've looked at the used Fender American Special Telecaster which look to run around $1k. A new American Performer series tele can probably be had as a demo for a couple hundred bucks more, or a new one for maybe $300 more. Are there advantages besides the small savings to getting a used one? Thanks
