Is this Just 5 pokemon games in one?

I just downloaded the game with all roms and It seems on a surface level that this is a merger with 5 games. Other than seeing other trainers in the over world what other features sets this apart from a standard game. Dont mean to come across ignorant or stupid. Just curious
