Potential ≠ power level

1) PREMISE

After the last questism chapter, I saw a ton of people believing that since both Johan and Daniel have the same potential, they’re gonna be equal at the end of series. Well, that’s not necessarily true and I don’t believe so, but the problem is not the comparison between Johan and Daniel, but the premise which the whole argument stands on: potential. Having the same potential doesn’t imply being at the same level.

2) DEFINITION OF POTENTIAL

Potential is not the level you can achieve as a fighter, because nobody has a fixed level that he can reach. But it describes your growth rate: the more potential you have, the less time you’re going to need to grow. And this is shown with prodigies like Daniel and Johan, who actually grow stronger after every single fight just thanks to them acquiring experience. this can be applied to every field, not only fighting.

3) DEBUNKING POTENTIAL ≠ POWER LEVEL

If the theory that “potential = power level” were to be true, then we would all agree that fighters with less potential shouldn’t even be able to touch fighter with more potential right? Well, this happens multiple times in lookism, even to prodigies like Johan or Daniel. Let me show you some examples:

-JICHANG VS TAESOO MA

As we know, jichang has defeated Taesoo at least once, while the Ansan’s prodigy was in his physical prime and also had his path (this happens before James starts hunting the kings). But how can this be possible? Taesoo is stated to have enough potential to even reach James, as he states himself, he also had a path, thresholds etc… something that Jichang can’t even come close to, as the best narrative feat he has, it’s being acknowledged as an excellent strategist by Elite, but nothing like what Taesoo was at in his prime right? Then why he loses? Because potential doesn’t represent the level of a fighter, but how much he can grow (and we also saw it after Taesoo regained his path during busan). Meaning that Taesoo would need less time grow into a better fighter compared to jichang, but jichang can reach that level too, simply by training more than Taesoo, acquiring more knowledge than Taesoo, perfectionist his skill more than Taesoo. I guess You got the point

-ZACK VS JOHAN

I know, I know what you’re going to say “Johan was nerfed while being drugged vs Zack” and you’re both wrong and right. While it’s true that Johan couldn’t use his BIQ during the fight because of the rage injected into his body, his physical stats were not nerfed, but enhanced: as we know, rage mode and killing intent boost your physical stats and not only that, he could also use his copy mode and even his PB body. So, if the theory about potential = power level were true, how is Zack able not only to put in a fight, but also stalemating against Johan? When we can all agree that Johan is on another level compared to Zack in potential terms: Because Zack filled the gap in potential, with more hard work, and he’s able to put a fight against one of the weakest forms of Johan, (which still is far more talented than him).

  • JICHANG VS DANIEL

Same premises as the Taesoo vs Jichang fight, but this time we have someone with even more potential than Taesoo: Daniel. And this Daniel had already awakened his potential after the training with gun, so how can Jichang even put a fight against him if Daniel is far more talented? Because he has worked for far more time than Daniel did, and the gap between his hard work and Daniel’s potential was insane. Another proof of hard-work beating potential

  • JOHAN AND DANIEL WITH GUN

This will be the last example, and even the most important one according to me. We can all agree that Daniel and Johan have the same potential right? Then, how can they be described/shown completely differently vs gun? Johan, with a path, while also fighting an extremely fatigued shiro oni, isn’t able to defeat him and falls to the ground. This Johan had no eye problem and he already had unlocked his path, so how can he not even come close to defeat him? (if he were to knock out gun, he would’ve been slaughtered by TUI gun). When gun talks about Daniel instead, not only he sees him as someone that can become like him (which already puts him above Johan), but he also states he’s gonna surpass him, amplifying the gap between him and the god dog? How is this possible, don’t they have the same potential? Shouldn’t they be equal? And no, this doesn’t mean that Johan is never gonna reach Daniel, but it’s just to show how the potential doesn’t determine the level of a fighter. Meaning that Johan can even surpass Daniel

4) CONCLUSION

While it’s true that potential is something important for the growth of a fighter, it doesn’t mean that this becomes an unclimbable wall for someone who has less potential, PTJ has shown has so multiple times, and even between the same tiers of potential there are gaps, which are filled by knowledge, training, skill etc… If a top tier needs 1 year to reach a determinate level, it doesn’t mean a fighter with less potential is never reaching that level, While he’s definitely gonna need more time. Anybody can reach the top of the mountain if he wants it bad enough.

Sorry for the yapping, let me know what you think
