Question about ancestry of Eastern Sicilians
Who do eastern Sicilians get their large amount of Levantine ancestry from? How could it be from the Phoenicians/Carthaginians when they only settled in parts of Western Sicily (in the provinces of Palermo and Trapani)? Perhaps a lot of it is from Sephardic Jews who might have intermixed with Sicilians at the times when Sicily was being ruled by rulers that were less strict in enforcing laws that barred and punished marriage with non-Christians. Also, some of Sicily’s Sephardic Jews would’ve intermixed with Sicilians after culturally and linguistically assimilating in order to avoid expulsion, especially in large cities.
