Double coffee for single shot?

Hi, I bought a coffee maker recently, and it has two buttons for making an espresso: to make a single shot, and to make a double/two shots. It also came with two portafilter baskets, a smaller one for making one shot, and a bigger for making two shots. My question is, if I use the double basket but then only pour enough water for a single shot, will I get a stronger espresso, or am I wasting coffee like that? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I'm not an enthusiast just trying to make coffee
