Results from our community survey
We received 104 responses to our survey. It was available from November 28th until December 13th. As mentioned in our posts and on the survey itself, most of the questions we asked came from frequently reported posts and comments.
TL;DR:
- We are now allowing images and gifs in comments
- Blog posts with multiple affiliate links are NOT allowed- either as a post or in a comment
- Craft kit posts (diamond painting, coloring book pictures, paint-by-number, etc.) are allowed
- r/diwhy, r/atbge, and similar subreddits are allowed as a comment on a post, but if reported will be removed under rule 1
- We will be replacing our weekly pinned thread with more daily variety threads
We will be adding the following tags: Sensitive Content, Machine Question, Holiday/Seasonal Craft, Craft from a kit, and Work in Progress. Discussion flair will be added to the Question/Help flair.
By the numbers:
- Overwhelmingly, people want to allow images in the comments. Only 1 person responded that they did not want any media in comments. 40 people (38.5%) want only images in comments but 63 people want images and gifs (60.6%). FYI: all images and gifs still need to follow our subreddit rules. If images/gifs break the rules so much that it causes us to moderate the posts continually, we'll turn off the function.
- More than ⅔ of users (71 people, 68.3%) do NOT want blog posts with multiple affiliate links. This will hold true for both posts and comments.
- The allowance of craft kits (diamond painting, paint by number, etc.) was won by a very, very narrow margin- 55 for yes (52.9%) and 49 for no (47.1%). I think this was the most contentious question in the survey this time. It switched between yes and no daily. At the moment, we will be allowing these types of posts. However, if they are continually reported we may bring it up on a future community survey and check the community temperature again. I think we may add this as a flair, too, so that users who do not want to see this craft can skip them.
- Comments of r/diwhy, r/atbge, etc. are allowed but will be removed under rule 1 if reported. 37 people (35.6%) did not want to allow this reference but 67 (66.4%) do. Of the yes group, 50 want it allowed but removed if reported. Since we cannot see who reports something on reddit, comments reported by anyone will be removed, even if the original poster did not report it.
- We will be switching up our weekly thread. 82 people (78.8%) want more variety, while 22 (21.2%) were happy with our weekly Craft Adjacent Thread. We aren’t sure what that will look like quite yet, but starting in the new year, we’ll post daily threads with different themes. The ones that receive the most interaction we’ll keep reposting.
- And finally, we are adding 5 new flairs and adding 1 to an existing flair:
- Sensitive Content (this will include politics, gore, nsfw, and anything you think qualifies as sensitive). If you are posting anything that needs this flair, you must also mark your post 'nsfw'. Flairing and tagging are two separate actions.
- Machine Question
- Discussion (this will be added to the Question/Help flair, and must be a craft related discussion)
- Holiday/Seasonal Craft (By far, the flair most people want is a “Holiday/Seasonal Craft” flair, with 74 users . This flair can be used for any seasonal craft, from New Year’s, to Valentine’s to Halloween.)
- Craft from a kit (This will include diamond paintings, paint by numbers, coloring pages, or any other type of kit that the material and/or directions are provided for you.)
- Work in Progress (There were a few who mentioned a WIP flair. I never realized that the main flair people use is titled “Finished Craft I Made”. While some people do post work in progress, it’s rare. Perhaps this flair will encourage more people to post. However, we will also caution that posting too many times about the same WIP may fall under rule 7 if there isn’t enough distinction among your posts.)
- Sensitive Content (this will include politics, gore, nsfw, and anything you think qualifies as sensitive). If you are posting anything that needs this flair, you must also mark your post 'nsfw'. Flairing and tagging are two separate actions.
Unfortunately, posts are only allowed to be tagged with one flair, so you’ll have to choose wisely. For anything political, nsfw, gore, or anything that falls within the sensitive content flair, that will supersede any other flair.
Users had many other suggestions. You can click the link above to read more, but we’ll address a few here:
- While it would be awesome to tag posts with media used such as ‘glass’, ‘fiber’, ‘paint’, etc. there would be too many flairs for this community. If reddit ever allows multi-flairing on posts, we definitely will institute craft type or craft material as a secondary flair people could choose.
- Looking for a particular crafter, looking for a commission, etc. are allowed in the pinned monthly shop thread.
- A few other user-listed flairs were: kid-friendly, kawaii, diwhy, and reply with images. We will see how the new flairs work and reassess before our next community survey. Depending on how well the new flairs are adopted, we may want to add more variety and we can ask at that time.
We made a few other changes last month, such as disallowing AI art or dropshipping. You can read more here. As always, leave any questions or comments below or free free to message us through modmail.
