Can I skip "A Vision of Shadows"?

Hey guys, I have a question.

I stopped reading the books after Dawn of the Clans which was like 7 years ago but recently I've gotten really into Warrior Cats again and started to read the books again. I heard that after Dawn of the Clans, the story just sucked so I decided to not buy the new books. However I visited a Warrior Cats forum the other day and everyone there was really excited about Shadowsight and what an amazing character he is. I read a bit about him and he really seems to be a cool character and I wanted to give the series another chance. Unfortunately I have little money and I don't think I want to read A Vision of Shadows and skip to The Broken Code. I would of course read a summary of vision of Shadows.

Can I do that or wouldn't I understand what's going on then?
