Apocalypse?

I wanna watch stranger things but can't tell, from the clips I see on youtube it looks like an apocalyptic world but in the first couple episodes it's just a mystery, so what's the setting like down the road, note: I'm not asking for why or what I Just wanna know if it's really crazy or not
