How to get back to base

Im really new to the game. Ive watched it be played a bit. I raided an enemy base and destroyed it. Now i cant get my colonists to come back. People in other forums say just right click on your base, but that isnt working. Ive clicked the destroyed base and then right clicked my base. that didnt work. Ive tried clicking other bases and for some reason, they just wont come home. I tried reloading my game and relaunching my game. am I just missing some controls?
