Does working night shift make you sick?
Hi everyone! I work in healthcare and I have been on day shift for the past 6 months and just recently transitioned to nightshift. In the past 3 weeks that I’ve worked nights, I have gotten sick twice to the point of needing antibiotics and missing multiple days of work. Got the flu during my first week and then next week a cold that turned into sinus infection/bronchitis. And this is with the same patient population, I didn’t get sick like this when I was on days. I know they say working nightshift causes more long term health problems but has anyone noticed an increase in common illnesses since working nights? It makes sense that when we’re sleeping less/getting poorer quality of sleep it would be easier to become sick. I’m just wondering if anyone experienced anything similar. Maybe it’s just part of the transition? I feel like I need to get back on days, or I’m pretty sure I’ll end up quitting or be fired soon.
Update - just wanted to add I worked as a bartender from 7 pm to about 2:30 AM. I had no problem with that schedule. It’s the 7P to 7A that’s killing me😭
