How early should someone be diagnosed?

I think one of my grandsons may have inherited narcolepsy. My oldest son has suspected it for a little while. He said my grandson falls asleep in the car any time they go somewhere, watching movies, or any time he has to sit still for a while without some sort of mental stimulation. I’ve only witnessed it a couple of times. Usually, when the grandkids spend the night, it’s with other cousins, so the activity level is pretty high. But this weekend, I witnessed him have cataplexy. My son was telling a story about an inappropriate comment my 6-year-old granddaughter made. Since she is only 6, she had no idea it was inappropriate, but it was absolutely hilarious. Both of the grandsons that were at my house started cracking up laughing. One remained standing, the other one fell to the floor. I asked my son how often my grandson falls to the floor when he laughs. He said not all the time it just has to be something that strikes him really funny. I told him that’s what cataplexy is and that pretty much confirms his suspicion of narcolepsy. So my question is, at what age should someone be diagnosed? The grandson we are suspecting to have it is only 11 years old. I’ve had symptoms as far back as middle school, but wasn’t diagnosed until I was 37. I’m wondering how much of a difference it would have made going through school if I understood why I was so sleepy all the time. I personally wouldn’t want him medicated, but maybe just having the knowledge to give to teachers.
