Why was Alex so upset when Cole helped Jackie at lunch on her first day?

Cole and Alex wanted to be kind to Jackie in the lunchroom on her first day and had the same idea, Cole just got there first. Neither Cole nor Alex were dating Jackie or owned her so why was Alex so upset that he left the lunchroom and sat there pouting while playing a game with Kaylee?
