Why do leftists claim to be fighting to protect democracy when they can’t handle the result of a functioning one?

This drives me wild. It’s as if they don’t want to accept the reality of living in a free country where people have different views and are allowed to express them. How could they possibly claim that they love and want to protect this country when they view anyone who disagrees with them as enemies of the state? They deny their part in society and demand that that same society protect and take care of them.
