HH is struggling for power in her relationship and has serious separation anxiety
HH did such a good job fooling people in the first couple of episodes. She left a majority of viewers to believe she was over JH, over their relationship and just generally burdened by his financial constraints. She pent her first few dates projecting this carefree image, faking connections with all the guys, complaining that JH was broke and not exciting, and pretending that she would be fine without JH. She made sure to covertly sabotage JH by constantly reminding him that his dates were boring, he didn’t look like he was having a good time while she yet again just came back from the greatest date of her life. It was sending the message “ you can’t find anyone better than me, JH likes me the most, I can leave anytime”. But the reality seems to be that HH wants a future with JH and she is terrified of him leaving.
We find out today that simply having JH move out of the room exposed what I’ve known of her all along. She is desperate to have JH commit to her. HH’s real issue with JH isn’t his pending military service or his (lack) of finances. It’s the fact that she stuck by him for 5 years and in all that time he still can’t imagine a future with her in it. When they had their confrontation date, JH said something really crucial that exposed their relationship and HH’s struggle. While HH can’t even handle JH sleeping in a another room, JH has pretty much resolved to break up with HH because he has no plans of creating a future that satisfies her desires.
I don’t think HH is asking JH for too much, I do think that she is asking for something he is unable to give her because he hasn’t figured it out for himself yet. Having to start a career over again from zero in his mid 20s, dealing with the trauma of failure and reimagining his own ideas of success and what he wants his life to be is something JH is deeply internalizing. He is just a passive partner and I wonder if it’s because he doesn’t have the emotional capacity to deal with the relationship and what it requires of him.
I get that HH is tired of waiting but she cannot let him go. She knows the power is in JH’s hands. Which is why she plays all these manipulative games, in an attempt to regain power and control. She is deeply bonded to JH and changing rooms gave her a shock of just how possible a break up could be. I wonder if HH is going to let him out of her sight long enough for him to set up a secret date.
