What was life like before online music streaming?

I grew up with the Internet so it's always been easy and convenient for me to have access to music anytime anywhere I go. Something about me though is that I don't really have favorite bands and my favorite music is random individual songs I like from different artists.

When CDs were popular if you were like me did you have to just constantly switch out CDs in your car just to play one song from one album and then another CD for a different song on another album?

It just sounds rather a little silly and tedious having to constantly swap out CDs just to play a few songs, there must've been an easier way to play all your favorite songs from different bands without looking insane carrying a briefcase of CDs frantically searching for the right one to swap out before the light turned green at a stoplight.
