Nix Question

I have 2 questions about Nix and sorry if they have been discussed before.

What was Nix's job? Was he administrative? He always seemed to know more about what was going on then the "typical" foot soldier.

In the Market Garden he got hit in his helmet was that a stray bullet? Was that ever discussed anymore?
