Recovered from withdrawal akathisia

I just wanted to share my experience for anyone going through this dreadful medical condition. I developed akathisia after abruptly cutting my dosage of risperidone in half (risperidone 4.5 mg to 2.25 mg). Two weeks after I did so I experienced the most intense form of restlessness which continued on for 2 months as far as pacing is concerned.

I am now four months out when the akathisia began and I’m largely recovered. It was the worst four months of my life. Constant pacing, the most extreme and debilitating form of anxiety, crippling insomnia, and endless suicidal thoughts. I had a relentless urge to end my life during these four months and one day the anxiety and suicidal ideation just abruptly stopped and I was feeling myself again. My sleep is still affected but it’s slowly getting better and I am confident it will improve with enough time.

If you’re going through a similar experience, you should know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It may take longer than 4 months but ultimately you will start feeling like your normal self again. Do not take your life and fall victim to this torturous condition. Your recovery will take place if you’re patient and have the fortitude to endure.

P.S. I took certain medication which I believe significantly assisted in my recovery process. A high dosage of seroquel to combat insomnia and an anti-depressant to combat the anxiety.
