Career advice
I’m 21 years old, preparing to join the Air Force with the goal of serving on active duty in an AFSC that will allow me to earn my Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license, along with three years of hands-on experience. My grandfather, now in his 70s, has been an Aircraft Maintenance Technician (AMT) and played a pivotal role in helping my family emigrate from Afghanistan to New York City, where we’ve been able to live comfortably. His career has greatly inspired my path, and I hope to follow in his footsteps in aviation.
I’d appreciate insights and advice from experienced AMTs on a few key questions:
- Does the Air Force Cover the Cost of the A&P License? I understand that some military roles provide training hours that count toward the A&P license. However, does the Air Force provide financial support for obtaining the license itself, either during or after service?
- Is the Air Force the Best Route for a Young Person Seeking an A&P License Without Debt? My primary goal is to gain technical skills, avoid educational debt, and establish a stable career foundation. Would the Air Force be the most effective and cost-efficient pathway compared to civilian training programs?
- Are There Challenges in the Field Related to My Background? I was born in Afghanistan, and I’d like to know if there are any experiences or advice regarding navigating this field with my background. Have you observed any specific challenges or considerations for AMTs from diverse backgrounds?
- What AFSC Would Best Support My Goals as a Future AMT? Are there specific Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSCs) that provide a more direct pathway to gaining AMT-relevant skills and experience? Any recommendations on roles or training paths would be very helpful.
- Is a College Degree Necessary for Job Opportunities After Service? With three years of military experience and an A&P license, do you think I’ll be able to secure an AMT job right out of the Air Force, or is a college degree typically required in the industry?
Thank you for your time and any guidance you can offer. Any additional advice on maximizing my career opportunities in aviation maintenance or specific paths to becoming a successful AMT would be greatly appreciated.
